Mayor Parker, PPA hold ceremonial bill signing to fund bus terminal

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Mayor Cherelle Parker and the Philadelphia Parking Authority hosted the ceremonial signing of a bill on Tuesday afternoon, funding the revitalization of a Center City bus terminal ahead of America's 250th celebrations.

The plan is to restore and reopen the former Greyhound bus facility at 10th and Filbert streets by May 1, to be used as an interim station until a permanent location is selected and finished, which will likely take years.

The deadline means the station would be ready in time for the thousands of people expected to visit Philadelphia from all over the country and the world for America's 250th celebrations, the FIFA World Cup, and the MLB All-Star Game.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker and the PPA will host the ceremonial signing of a bill funding the revitalization of a Center City bus terminal.

Under this new plan, the Philadelphia Parking Authority would renovate and manage the Filbert Street station through a ten-year lease.

According to the legislation, the PPA will collect fees from intercity bus carriers to pay for expenses related to operating the terminal.

In 2023, Greyhound relocated its service to temporary curbside locations after terminating its lease at the Filbert Street station.

For a few months, passengers were boarding at 6th and Market streets, but there were concerns about safety and congestion. The stop was then moved to 2nd and Spring Garden streets in Northern Liberties.

But the current Northern Liberties location is an unsheltered, curbside stop with no permanent restrooms and no seating.

The PPA Executive Director Rich Lazer says the hope is that this new hub will help revitalize nearby blocks and businesses, while creating an intercity state-of-the-art transportation facility that is clean and safe.
